Congrats to Olivia Borge, a recent graduate of Kamehameha School
Alexander & Baldwin has awarded scholarships to four Maui students as part of their scholarship program for employee dependents. The scholarship is offered throughout the state and on the Mainland. A total of eight aspiring college students received awards between $2,500 to $4,000.
“A&B’s scholarship program was first established in 1971,” said Linda M. Howe, Vice President, Alexander & Baldwin Foundation. “The application information and criteria is provided to A&B employees only, however, because the program is not open to the general public. There were eight students in total who received awards this year, and each is renewable up to three years. The most exciting element was: the uniformly delighted reactions of the proud and happy parents!”
This year’s scholarship recipients include four children of Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company (HC&S) employees: Olivia Borge, Liane Nakamae, Justin Shortell and Carlin Ventura. These four students were among the eight selected company-wide to receive scholarships this academic year, to support their undergraduate or graduate education.
OLIVIA BORGE is the daughter of Brady Borge, general mechanical specialist at HC&S. A recent graduate of Kamehameha Schools-Maui, Olivia will attend Stanford University. In high school, she was involved in the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) and will pursue a career in health services and its related sciences. At Kamehameha, she participated in student government, choir and paddling. She also danced hula and volunteered as a tutor for local Maui charities.

Congrats to LIANE NAKAMAE
LIANE NAKAMAE is the daughter of Peter Nakamae, general superintendent of management information systems at HC&S. A graduate of H.P. Baldwin High School, Liane earned her bachelor’s degree from Pacific University in Oregon. She will be attending the university’s physical therapy school in the fall and plans to return to Maui with a graduate degree to work as an inpatient physical therapist. She has also coached girl’s soccer teams, volunteered at her local church and taught keiki music and math.

Congrats to JUSTIN SHORTELL
JUSTIN SHORTELL is the son of Vicki Shortell, applications systems specialist at HC&S. A recent King Kekaulike High School graduate, Justin will begin his first year at the University of Hawaii at Manoa this fall. He is pursuing a career in the pharmacology industry and hopes to eventually return to Maui. In high school, Justin participated on both cross country and swimming teams. He was also a member of the surfing club and volunteered his time to local charity walks and beach cleanups.

Congrats to CARLIN VENTURA
Carlin Ventura is the son of Donna Ventura, human resources assistant at HC&S.
A graduate of King Kekaulike High School and the University of Portland in Oregon,
Carlin will continue his education at Pacific University’s Pharmacy program in the fall.
Carlin has work experience at local pharmacies, and plans to become a pharmacist. He
is also actively involved in Boy Scouts of America and has volunteered helping with
many service projects as assistant Scoutmaster.
